stories told and songs sung

Life is full of stories and songs. By sharing them, maybe we see a little more clearly how we are all connected.

Location: Deep South

I grew up in Texas and then went off to college in Tennessee. There I met my future wife in a great story you'll have to hear someday. Med school was back in Texas. We got married during my 2nd year. After med school, it was on to Neurology residency in the Deep South. Now that I'm a full fledged neurologist, I'm just trying to balance it all with a new baby on the way...

Walk with me

As evidenced by the posts in this blog, I am always in search of the next wildest story. The dearth of posts lately is not for lack of interesting stories. In the past week, I heard the most insane and disturbing story I have ever heard. Seriously, it is so over the top, I can't post it here.

But on the less insane side, I have had the most intellectually challenging last few weeks at the hospital that I have had in my burgeoning young career. I guess that's what drew me to neurology. I sat back today and looked at the diagnoses of my current patients: 1) Status migrainosus 2) ALS 3) Guillain-Barre Syndrome 4) Progressive Supranuclear Palsy 5) Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease 6) Diffuse Lewy Body Dementia with features of Cortical Basalganglionic Degeneration. All in the hospital with acute decompensations, all providing unique medical/social challenges. And though for some of the patients I haven't been able to offer much in the way of medical treatment, it has been so much more gratifying to offer them my time and my ear. Sharing in the stories of their lives, I see so clearly that there is more to healing than ordering tests and pushing pills. It is my privilege to walk with them for just a few steps in their journey. Such fascinating diseases but far more fascinating patients. Every day I am humbled and reminded that there is only one true healer. And I feel His touch through the stories and songs that so sweetly surround me.

"Walk With Me" - Caedmon's Call
Walk with me quiet, walk with me slow
With watered-down coffee, and words of gold
I can feel the edges of these things
When I hear you speak to me, so walk with me

Walk with me empty, walk with me strong
The hush of our voices, when the day seems so long
It is like a balm, it is like a jewel
It unravels all I thought I knew

Will you lead me, beside the still waters
Where the oil, it runs over, and my cup overflows
You restore my soul

Tell me the story, where old is made new
The promise of ages, and all things that are true
When the shadows fall and the wrecking ball
Swings and tears me through the heart
